Food - Chocolate Origin

Who loves chocolate cake? I don't think I know anyone who doesn't like love it. A good chocolate cake makes everything better; add a glass of wine or a cup of tea, and a rainy day... Perfect.

What is a birthday without a nice birthday cake? For mine, my sister bought Chocolate Origin's Original chocolate cake. The 6" cake costs $29. Before this, my mum had raved about how good it was after trying it at its Changi Village branch. Since then, I've been wanting to try it out for myself and see if it is better than Awfully Chocolate. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my sister had bought this cake for me, after coming home from a day at work and birthday dinner at Dean & Deluca.

One slice before bed.

I'm not one to watch what I eat, because thank goodness I have had no need to (so far). So how was the cake?

Well for one, it was smooth. Really smooth, and not too sweet at all. The problem with most cakes is that they are too sweet, and with chocolate cake (and chocolates, really) is that the sweetness should not  overpower the taste of chocolate. Really good and satisfying milk chocolate is hard to come by, and it's my favourite; I don't like white chocolate or dark chocolate. So yes, back to this cake. It's smooth, not too sweet and the chocolate is good.

However... Now this is going to seem like I'm shooting myself in the foot but it's too chocolatey, and not in a good way at all. Bad chocolate cake either contains very little or too much chocolate, and when a cake is too chocolatey, it means that it becomes tiresome to eat after a while. With this cake though, it became a bit tiresome to eat because it tasted the same throughout. I feel that when it comes to cakes, there should be a play between different types of flavours in the cake. This cake just tasted the same throughout, and that is why I still prefer Awfully Chocolate's cakes. The sponge in AF's cakes is just right, and combined with chocolate icing, it doesn't get boring or tiresome at all!

For the last two birthdays, my birthday cakes were from AF, and while Chocolate Origin's cake is not bad, I will only want AF's cake for my birthday next year. Or anyone's birthday, really. Any excuse for good chocolate cake eh?

I hope everyone's weekend is going swimmingly. Till the next time!
